Description - The Local Context - Response The Local Context Københavns Kvindedaghøjskole is a private, self-governing institution, partly financed by public funds. It is a non-formal, liberal educational institution, a Non-Residential Folk High School (=daghøjskole). The ideas and visions for "daghøjskoler" are based on N.F.S. Grundtvig. He talked about "enlightenment for life" rather than formal or vocational education. The objective of Københavns Kvindedaghøjskole is empowerment of unemployed women, ethnic Danes and ethnic minorities with short or no formal education after compulsory school. The emphasis is laid on "lifelong learning", guidance and counselling programmes to bring forward active citizens. According to the law, the participants are from 18 to 61 years of age, and most of them have not had the possibility or the interest in education earlier in their lives. The school offers courses of 18 to 24 weeks duration - 30 lessons a week - and of wide-ranging contents and focus. In special projects, like projects within the Youthstart programme, the schools have the possibility to offer education for special fees. In this case it is possible to offer education for participants younger than 18 years. This specific project deals with young mothers from 15 to 25 years of age.
