Description - The Local Context - Response Description CAPE (Creative Partnerships in Education) took its inspiration from a successful Chicago based initiative which develops the potential of young people by using creative means to improve both the process and management of teaching and learning. CAPE's initial focus was on the development of creativity within the school curriculum. CAPE seeks to develop local learning partnerships between a high school, its primary schools, creative professionals and organisations, the local and business communities. Through the YOUTHSTART project we have focussed on the needs of young people between the ages of 14 and 20. This divides into two main areas; 14-16 year olds who are not achieving within the school system and who are at risk of dropping out, and; 16-20 year olds who are out of the school system, but who are not in employment and who are marginalised by the post 16 education and training system. We are seeking to explore how involvement in creative activities can re-engage young people who have switched off learning and are at risk of truanting or leaving school with little or no qualifications.
